What Is Dimethylether?

Dimethylether (DME) is the simplest ether and consists of two methyl groups linked by an oxygen atom (CH?-O-CH?). Thanks to its simple oxygen-containing molecular structure, DME can be used in a wide variety of applications as fuel, energy carrier, hydrogen carrier and chemical feedstock. Under ambient conditions, DME is a gas, but it can be liquefied under relatively low pressure, making storage and transport comparatively straightforward. DME can also be blended with propane at concentrations of up to 14% without significant impacts on materials or infrastructure. Because of its high hydrogen content, DME can serve as a chemical hydrogen carrier and can be utilized for hydrogen supply when required. Its nearly soot-free, diesel-like combustion makes DME especially attractive for compression ignition engines, heating systems and industrial energy applications. When produced from renewable feedstocks or renewable hydrogen and carbon sources, DME can contribute significantly to the defossilization of energy and fuel applications.

Why Companies Are Investing in DME

  • Diesel Substitute Fuel: DME can be used in adapted compression ignition engines and enables nearly soot-free combustion with extremely low particulate emissions.
  • Alternative Heating Fuel: Due to its excellent combustion characteristics, DME can serve as a fuel for suitable heating and thermal energy systems.
  • LPG and Propane Blend Component: DME can be blended with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and propane, helping reduce fossil fuel content while introducing renewable components into existing supply chains.
  • Energy and Hydrogen Carrier: Its high energy density and ease of liquefaction make DME suitable for energy storage and transport. It can also function as a chemically bound hydrogen carrier.
